ProgramRules of Space – Rules of Success
About
"Why are you so lucky?" I asked myself this question in 2013, finding myself among the youngest professionals to have visited the ISS. Behind me was a record-short preparation period — just six and a half years instead of the standard ten. Our crew was the first to test the new rapid rendezvous scheme with the ISS. As part of this expedition, I was to perform three spacewalks, one of which would become record-breaking in duration.
The first flight program turned out tobe packed with complex and interesting challenges that, unlike routine activities, were both tests and sources of energy simultaneously. I was simply thrilled, and later realized there were too many coincidences for it to be mere chance.
When you begin analyzing your path, you often discover that behind the apparent randomness of success lie quite specific behavioral principles. Ones you followed without even realizing it. As if space itself was suggesting rules, adherence to which opens the path to the impossible.
What do preparation for spaceflight and achieving any ambitious goal have in common? What unspoken laws determine success in space and in life? How do you turn "impossible" into "done"? I invite you to discover the universal rules that help transform dreams into reality — whether it's a flight to space or any other goal that seems unattainable.
